Sometimes being cared for is as simple as ordering in and enjoying a quiet evening together.
You can love taking care of someone
and still need to be taken care of, too.
Your partner asks, “What should we have for dinner?”
You open the refrigerator.
There are vegetables.
Some leftovers.
Enough to put together a simple meal.
You know what to do.
You usually do.
But tonight, you stand there a little longer.
You enjoy these small ways of caring.
The familiarity of making something
for someone you love.
Only tonight, you wish you could simply sit down.
The meal would be simple.
You’re tired all the same.
You close the refrigerator
without taking anything out.
Just for this evening,
you’d like someone else to cook
while you rest.
I love taking care of you.
But tonight, I’d like to be looked after, too.
The Role You Take Pride In
Perhaps you know that feeling.
There are things you usually do
for the person you love.
You enjoy doing them well.
They make life a little easier for both of you.
They’re one of the ways you show you care.
Your partner looks after you, too.
They take care of things
you don’t have to worry about.
But something you were happy to do yesterday
can feel like too much today.
And when you’re usually the one who handles it,
you might find yourself carrying on anyway.
“This is my thing,” you think.
“I can do it. It won’t take long.”
And perhaps you can.
But being able to do something
doesn’t mean you have the energy
to do it every time.
When You Need a Break, Not Just a Hand
Sometimes you don’t want help doing the task.
You want a break from being the one who does it.
You don’t want to get it started,
talk someone through it,
or come back to finish it.
You want to know it’s taken care of
while you rest.
There’s a difference between someone helping you cook
and someone making dinner for you.
And sometimes you want more than the meal itself.
You want someone to notice that you’re tired.
To make something easier for you.
To say, “Go and rest. I’ve got this,”
even when you could still do it yourself.
You know your partner may be tired, too.
You care about that.
You don’t want to make their day harder.
But you’re tired, too.
You don’t have to decide whose day was harder
before either of you is allowed to need rest.
Sometimes the difficulty isn’t giving so much.
It’s feeling there is no room to give less.
Saying What You Need Today
Your partner may know you usually enjoy cooking
and assume you’re happy to do it tonight.
They may not know you’d like a break.
Perhaps you’re so used to doing it
that you haven’t said anything.
Or you know what you want,
but asking feels a little awkward.
“This is normally mine to do.”
But just because you usually do something
doesn’t mean you have to do it every time.
You can say,
“Would you cook dinner tonight?
I’d really like to be looked after.”
You’re telling them what would feel good today.
Sometimes you want someone else to take over.
Sometimes you want an easier option.
Sometimes you just want company.
“I don’t need advice right now.
I’d just like you to sit with me.”
Of course, saying what you need
isn’t the same as having someone listen.
If you’ve asked many times
and your partner keeps brushing it aside,
that’s different.
You shouldn’t have to keep asking
for the same thing to be taken seriously.
Both people need to listen
and do what they’ve agreed to do.
But sometimes your partner won’t know
you need something different
until you tell them.
They may know what you usually like doing.
They still need to know how you feel today.
You Can Give Care and Need It, Too
You can still be someone your partner counts on.
You can enjoy what you do for them
and sometimes want them to take over.
You can appreciate everything they do for you
and still ask for something different.
You can like being needed
and like being looked after.
You don’t have to choose between the two.
You won’t always do the same amount.
Some days, one of you will need more care than the other.
What matters is that either of you can say,
“Today, I need something different.”
You can be capable
and still have days when you’re tired,
unsure, or in need of a little comfort.
You don’t have to keep showing how much you can handle
to deserve that comfort.
Sometimes care is as simple
as someone saying,
“Let’s just order in tonight.”
No cooking.
No worrying about dinner.
Just a little time
to sit together and rest.
Not because you couldn’t cook.
But because tonight, you don’t have to.
